Roast leaflet

I've been working on putting a small leaflet together for roast, to show what they have to offer.

I also thought it would be a good idea to introduce the typeface I designed, after making the logo. Since having a play with it, I came to the conclusion that it's too illegible, so wouldn't work. Perhaps it could be used some other way. Either way, it's still a typeface that will have the potential for something!

The leaflet will be a concertina, consisting of 5 folds. This would give me more than enough space to work with.

Since my trip to various coffee shop and seeing all the little bits and pieces they have extra to offer, I decided to make up some sugar packaging.

I've been busy photographing the postcards I made for roast.

I'm pretty happy with how they've printed. They look pretty slick.

I've had a few troubles trying to get decent photographs of them though. I want to get some really good shots, but it's hard controlling the depth of field. Initially I wanted to get the front area in focus whilst the background was blurred, but most of the photos went from a little out of focus at the front, to in focus, and then back out of focus. Gah! I do quite like the few end ones though (eco friendly tree).

Bag

I want to make a bag that will be used to carry anything bought at the coffee shop, roast.

I'm going to go for a gift bag-look, though it'll be made out of the same stock as the sandwich and coffee packaging.

As you can see here, these are my initial tries. For the time being, I've had to make the net up myself because I can't find a decent one anywhere.

Sugar

These are just quick mock ups of the sugar designs for roast.

I really like the long thin variety. They look a lot more like sugar packaging, though some coffee shops/cafes have the more square look (last image).

First lot of sugar art work play abouts. You can't see on most of them, but they will be folded in half.

Re-usable?

I really like the idea of using objects within the poster advertisements. Using something to create something else is part of the whole 'eco friendly' concept behind Roast.

An example of what I'm yapping about is this..

I want to make up some tissues displaying the shop's logo, just like costa coffee and other shops do. I could, for example, create a bunch of flowers out of them. A clever tag line would follow a photograph of these on the poster advertisements.

I could apply this concepts to other ideas such as: coffee cups, sugar wrappers, plates etc.

Sandwich nets

Apologies for the lack of visibility. I've used a very fine stroke, because I'll be printing them out later on this afternoon and prefer to use lighter strokes.

Anyway, just a few variations of the layout for the front of the packaging.

Almost every sandwich packaging I've come across has had some sort of 'peep hole' so the customer can see the food they're about to purchase. I find this an extremely important part of the packaging, so I've used the bean from the logo to act as the window.

Cup designs

I'm looking at the take-out coffee cups that will be available in the shop.

Again, simplicity is the key here. I think the logo is all that is needed.

I thought it might be a nice idea to make use of the 'o', but I don't think it's enough to be able illustrate where the person may have bought this from.

Potential food packaging

This was literally something I made up on the spot. It was in my mind and I just had to have a go.

I think it's kinda neat, though I don't think I'll be using it as the final piece. It looks too complicated. I want to keep it as simple as possible, so I think I will use the basic food packaging as I want the emphasis to be on the eco friendly material rather than what it looks like.

I'm about to go down to print for the first time. I'm hoping it'll turn out good.

I'm also going to be printing stickers so I can have a play around with them and see what they're like.

Back to packaging

I've finally managed to create a square full of 'eco type' type. It was such a laborious, but I'm happy with the result.

I've tried putting the design inside the packaging, in replacement of the type tree. I've been on the fence about the type tree since doing it. I like it, but I'm not convinced it sits well.

I also tried using the the design to cover the entire inside of the packaging. I thought it would look a lot more interesting and a little less lost.

I only had access to a small scale printed design, hence the teeny packaging! I still it looks good though.

I printed the artwork on the stock and had a go at making small maquettes of the final product to see how it all looked.

I like how it's come out. I think the logo on the top of packaging works well printed, though I'll be trying other methods to get it on there. At least I know this works well.

I wanted to see how the logo looked in reverse, so the type would be coloured rather than surrounded by a full colour background.

I don't think it works. It doesn't stand out as well as the original. It was worth a try though!

At last, I've had access to the printers upstairs! I've just printed a few testers out, to see how the colours look on a plain white background as well the stock I wish to use for the packaging.
